In 1888 Russian Nikolay Ashinov raised funds for a private "spiritual mission" in Abyssinia and took 150 Russians including women and children with him, most of them were under impression that they would found a Orthodox Mission in Ethiopia to provide aid for Christian Africans. Ashinov - who had already tried a colonial venture in Africa once - instead took them to Djibouti, where they settled in an abandoned fort, and Ashinov declared it the New Moscow. By this point a lot of his companions had already noped out and fled to nearby French settlements, and in around a month a French warship arrived to the fort and told Ashinov to fuck off from the French protectorate. He refused, so the warship shelled the fort, killing six people, after which Ashinov surrendered. New Moscow was abolished after existing unrecognized for under a month, the French had Ashinov and other remaining Russians shipped back to Russia, where Ashinov was arrested and detained in house arrest for three years before the czar pardoned him the next year.
