Augustine's doctrine are antimanichean when you read his work. He explicitly takes the Neoplatonist position that evil is a privation of being because the Manicheans taught that evil a literal, material substance, concentrated in an actual realm of darkness and opposed to by the infinite light of the Godhead. By denying that evil is a substance Augustine denies some core Manichean metaphysics.
