>>18115761People back then didn’t really think in terms of language. Many Muslims from Greece who settled in Turkey after 1920 never learned Turkish but their kids did. Colloquial Turkish was barely a thing outside few scarce populations and the Ottoman language was a lot like English in the sense of preserving core native grammar but replacing much of it with stuff from other languages.
