how did people in the past cope without antidepressants, living worse lives and all that?
>>
The Bible.
>>
Too busy to be depressed
>>
>>18117165
we work harder today than in the past
>>18117164
I mean worldwide, except in Islam, being a superior religion

>I mean worldwide
Religion
>>
>>18117160
People in the past lived harder lives, but they weren't necessarily worse lives.
>>
>>18117225
>but they weren't necessarily worse lives.
A load of horshit, they were objectively worse.
>>
>>18117160
Same way they do in modern shitholes, religion, artistic outlets, that sort of thing
>>18117181
>we work harder today than in the past
LOL!
I don't think you understand how laborious life was in the pre-industrial age. You'd yearn for your precious dishwasher and clothes washing machines within the first week of living in the past.
>>

Suicide rates today in England are lower than in the Victorian period, but higher than in the Tudor age.

alcohol is the best antidepressant, also you could not act out your depression because someone would come to beat you back into work.

he'd yearn for a water tap, even a cold-only one.
>>

>Tudor period
I'd be skeptical over suicide statistics in the pre-Victorian era, as many of them were probably undocumented and/or ruled as some deaths by other means over religious taboos.

Most people then as now are too stupid to be significantly depressed.
Your mistake is thinking that depression is something that happens as a result of external factors. That a life full of suffering must naturally make any creature depressed. But if that were the case our primordial ancestors would have gone extinct in a flash. Life by biological nature must be resistant to mental anguish otherwise it could not exist.

nice thread

How do you know mate? Were you there? Shut up.

Considering antidepressants are just a way to tolerate a bad situation without dealing with it, I'd assume they just got to grip with reality.
>living worse lives
You'll never notice how good or bad you have it unless you have something else to compare it to
>>
>>18117160
didnt have time for being depressed, if they get depressed they died
>>

Having a guaranteed wife and or husband.
>>
>be premodern contract farm hand, peasant, or slave
>be depressed because of how much life sucks
>just dont feel like getting up and facing the day
>your master comes in and beats you for loafing

>idea of an incredibly important modern comfort is a dishwasher
God damn you're soft.

A lot of people (redditors) today consider going to a therapist as necessary as going to the dentist or family doctor. They probably went, bitched a couple times, then got prescribed anti-depressants because they hand those out like candy,
>>
>>18118267
I have known so many people who went to therapy, and it did not help a single one of them.
The pills never helped anything, the advice was trite, and the underlying issue had to be solved or at least escaped before anything changed.
Inviariably, the pills never left, since they became a humor regulation baseline.
I would tell you I don't know how shrinks live with themselves, but I actually do: they pop as many pills as they hand out.
>>
They weren't depressed because they could beat their women.
>>
>>18117356
>over religious taboos.
I say even modern ones are underreported for the same reason, way too many "accidental deaths" from gun cleaning.
>>
>>18117160
Someone already mentioned alcohol but they also chewed a diverse set of leaves, nuts, and probably consumed even stranger shit like lizard droppings. (not making it up btw https://www.researchgate.net/publication/292336966_Lizard_as_psychoactive_fauna_an_unconventional_addiction)

Antidepressants are extremely fucked up and will permanently alter your brain chemistry just because you couldn't handle being sad.
