There was a pre-existing prophecy attributed to Persian/Babylonian religious leaders about the Messiah. This text was fairly well known at the time and referenced in other text but it was lost later on.

The Messiah concept is strongly connected to Zoroastrianism, which had its own savior figure before Judaism (Saoshyant). One of the first people to be called Messiah by the Jews was Cyrus the Great, although that was before the Messiah became the name for a single divine figure and just meant a great, holy person.
