They bought land at very acceptable prices from Latin American governments like Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Brazil, and to a lesser extent the other countries in Latin America and built towns, farms, etc. in there. It didn't always work, Nietzsche's sister tried to run one of these colonies with her husband and failed, for example.
