>never historically had lions in its territory>still used themwhats the explanation?
Lions are cool
Its fvcking cool
You aint seen nothin yet
They inherited that coat of arm from their French overlordsAnd continental Europe once had lions
>>18126553Only in the Balkans, unless you go back to fucking prehistorical times.
>>18126518>The one tiny lionHeraldry is some autism kino. Most nerds now would call this ugly but there's something beautiful and hypnotizing about it.
>never historically had dragons in its territory>still used a dragon on its flagIt’s because it looks cool, you fucking nerd.
Because lions became popular across the old world due to hellenic and latin influence.
>never historically had unicorns in its territory>still used them
>>18126823Lions had little if any cultural symbolism to the romans
>>18126837They were in the later roman empire when they had more eastern influences. The importance of the lion in the fertile crescent and biblical era cultures spread via the romans into other parts of europe. Keep in mind lions were once common in the middle east. Most of the lions used in roman arenas that got fed christian kibbles were asiatic lions, not african ones.
>>18126837Ahem
>>18126974>>18126968The first heraldic lion emblem emerged in France in the 12th century. It's hard to imagine it was some popular Roman cultural symbol that somehow survived up to that point
>>18126978The first heraldic emblems at all originate from the 11th century. You really think that not a single depiction of lions exists in europe from before someone slapped them unto a heraldric shield? This is like saying that hot womrn didnt exist before the 1940s because pinup girls painted on warplanes didnt exist yet.
>>18126991It just seems doubtful that an animal that wasn't particularly important to the romans somehow survived in the background as a cultural symbol for centuries
>>18126994I dispute the idea that lions held no cultural importance to the romans. Herakles, the greatest demigod, wore the skin of the nemean lion. And herakles was an extremely popular god, not just in the roman world but virtually anywhere greek culture had touched. And Why is it hard to believe? They look cool. Other roman emblems somehow survived all that time, like the imperial eagle. Shit we still mostly use eagles as emblems in western nations primarily because of roman influence. Theres a mediveal german ballad that recounts alexander the greats exploits, describing him as the first caesar (and a godfearing christian lmao). The memory of roman culture was still pretty prevalent in mediveal europe if somewhat distorted and mixed with other cultures, like christian and germanic
>>18126833WTF Anglos and Scotchs are out of their mind to persist in their nuttery
>>18126461Well you see one dude had the heart of a lion
>>18126461>>18126833Correct me if im wrong but isnt that the Lion of Zion?its jewish influence, tho again could be wrong
>>18126461Christianity.
>>18126610My eyes immediately went to that one tiny lion too
>>18126991>hot womrn didnt exist before the 1940s because pinup girls painted on warplanes didnt existThis but unironically
