And this was just one engagement, the US military did fine against the indians, sadly for everyone involved.

Sometimes you lose battles, especially when heavily outnumbered. Comparing this sort of thing to the Civil War is idiotic. The US never had the remotest chance of losing after Tecumseh was killed and his confederation fell apart, they always held all the power from then on.
