It comes down to whether or not you believe Jesus when He said the gates of hell won’t prevail against the church. Protestants are implicitly saying the gates of hell prevailed by protesting the church.

He just accepted that schism was the obvious inevitable outcome when the pope/papal authorities continuously chimped out at the slightest legitimate criticism of their predatory policies. It's astounding that anyone could blame him and not the corrupt church authorities for the schism. No unbiased person who knows how it played out would ever blame him for it.
