Were there a bit chances if both of these countries joined and attacked North Africa or UK? Why didn't they grab the golden opportunity?
>>18128121They wouldn't be able to take Gibraltar
>>18128157fippity bippity>>18128121Spain had just gotten out of a very bad civil war, the last thing they wanted was to give the Allies an incentive to start dropping bags of money, weapons, and commandos in Spain. Neutrality was Franco's offer for not getting involved, and it satisfied everyone. The real question you should be asking is: what if Turkey joined the Axis?
It would have been nothing that more easy coast line for Allies to effortlessly invade Europe from.
>>18128121> Spain and Italy storm Gibraltar>the Med is closed>the Italian Navy handles the Mediterranean Fleet as it withers away>western and central med are under axis control>the NA campaign progresses to Alexandria>all of the Med is under acis controlWould be a big blow to the UK. Anyway then the US joins and the quickest scenario becomes a nook on Rome or Madrid so it ends up even worse
>>18128121No, we were poor, backwards countries where a huge part of the population lived off of subsistence farming. That's what happens when you want to be "right-wing" without relatively free markets.>t. Portuguese whose grandparents herd sheep and farmed potatoes for a living in the 60s
>>18128121No, the civil war drained them entirely they had no ability to wage another war. Also Spain was entirely dependent on american food. Joining the axis meant they would starve.
>>18128460A quick blitz on Gibraltar coordinated with the Italian navy and airforce would have probably done the trick, the problem was holding it all the while the country risked another British funded commie uprising
>>18128121Hi jeet, this retarded question has been asked and aswered many times. The answer is “No”.>>18128157You’re an even MORE retarded jeet dog. Holy shit, you are one stupid motherfucker. Never post here again.
>>18128484Taking Gibraltar doesn’t actually matter. Yes, it could be done, (please ignore what the first retarded shitskin in the thread had to say about it), but it is rather pointless. The only benefit that taking Gibraltar had was preventing Malta from having easy resupply. But it doesn’t garuntee Malta’s fall or anything.
>>18128121Spain wanted to join, Hitler told them no. All it would do is give the British another place to land in Europe. Protecting all of Spain's coast would have been impossible for GErmany
>>18128238This. In Iberia, the ports literally had more logistical capacity than the roads and rails had. A non-jeet would instantly realize the advantage that grants to the Allies in establishing a foothold in Europe. In fact, the Germans DID experience exactly that problem. Peninsular Italy had the same exact problem, albeit the discrepancy between coastal and interior infrastructure was less pronounced & exaggerated. The Balkans too also had this issue. The Centeal Powers encountered this issue on the Salonica front, where the port of Salonica all by itself provided more than enough infrastructure capacity for the supply required to fend off German/Bulgarian attacks from the north.Germany would have most benefited from a war of limited geographic range, especially if that range was limited to north-central Europe. Even extending the war to Norway heavily stretched & strained German resources. Norway was a net negative to Germany, despite the strategic options and economic protection which occupying it offered. The German command tried very hard to prevent the expansion of the war in the Mediterranean. This was all mostly Italy’s fault.
>>18128121Eh, once Hitler decided to ignore Britain and attack the USSR, it was over. There wasn’t anything he could do.
>>18128121no>spain just got out of a civil war and still had political tension simmering that could explode again if they joined the war>heavily relied on forgein imports and when they asked if Germany could make up the difference for the inevitable blockade they stated they couldn't>Germany would essentially need to station additionl troops in the area due to the mentioned above problems and the fact the allies would invade the place>Britain had other ways of entering the med so the meme of muh gibralter would be a nucance at best
>>18128641Hitler studying 1800s peninsular wars (proto-Afghanistan wars), he probably know.
>>18128427Complete and utter retardation & mindrot.
>>18128634This is bigger than Malta. Blockading gibraltar is a huge deal because it prevents resupplying to the Mediterranean fleet meaning the Italian Navy can act bolder and eventually wipe them out/force them into hidingTaking Malta would just be a natural consequence but the big result would be Mediterranean dominationBut again the problem is holding Gibraltar long enough for all of this to develop
>>18128789No, this is not accurate. Resupply of the Mediterranean fleet was in fact mostly done from routes heading around the Cape of Good Hope and up the Red Sea through the Suez. Gibraltar was not even ever once a route of resupply for the Med Fleet IIRC. Two convoys headed from Gibraltar did yes save Malta, on two seperate occassions, but there’s no reason to assume that Britain would have been unable to do this from Suez had the option of doing it from Gibraltar not existed. The Italian navy tried several times to challenging the Royal Navy close to shore, close to their air units, and they failed miserably. Outside of heavy air protection, which is something that the Axis were not only poor at but were slowly being squeezed out of, there’d be no real way to cordone off Malta. The only real value that the Iberian Peninsula has is actually out in the Atlantic, and is actually a game-changer. But you lot never even get into that, because your knowledge base on this topic is so barebone poor.
>>18128641Hitler wanted Spain to join, Franco didn't. However Franco didn't want to completely destroy his relationship with Germany, so rather than outright refuse he purposely demanded more than Hitler would ever be willing to offer, hence leading Hitler to "refuse"
>>18128626>>18128634Why is there so much emphasis on "jeet" or "shitskin"? Is it some kind of projection?
>>18128895This is the standard reddit narrative and it’s been denunked. It could kes from a dubious dourve and untrustworthy author
>>18128924Assblasted shitskin confirmed
>>18128427>Spain and Italy storm Gibraltarok, how?
>>18128969It’s pretty simple you retarded shitskin dog. We just can’t (and won’t) explain it again to a dog like you.
>>18128860Anon most of these people are literally retards with zero knowledge. They will never understand basic logic that the Mediterranean obviously wasn't a convoy route after Italy joined. You don't even need to be an expert on ww2 to understand this, just look at the fucking map and use common sense. Sicily blocks the entire sealane.Capturing Gibraltar at best gives German submarines access to the Mediterranean, and it will severely weaken Malta since the western approach was many times used for emergency supply. That's the plus for the Axis. Now comes the negative:1. Malta can still be supplied from its eastern approach, and this was the main route IRL. Axis also lack amphibious doctrine and capability to capture such a fortified position, hence why it never happened.Majority of Italian capital navy ships is still crippled due to fuel shortage just like IRL. Captured Gibraltar doesn't change this. Cunningham will still have a superior position in the Mediterranean.2. Now that Spain is in the war, Royal Navy will likely immediately seize Canary Islands and close the Gibtaltar straight from the western end.3. Now that Spain is in the war; having been completely reliant on British and US food imports for her mere survival IRL duringthe war, will now have to rely on food and fuel imports from Germany to sustain its entire state and military. Being bankrupt, underequipped (virtually no mechanized divisions or airforce) and rural economy, Germany will have to shoulder Spains defences and military deficiency just like with Italy, in order to prevent any allied foothold and suppress Spanish partisansIn the end, none of this solves Hitlers problems. He cannot wage war against the British empire without oil, and the food recieved by trade with Stalin wasn't enough. And even if he went all-out on war with Britain, Stalin will use the opportunity to strengthen his own position, industrialize the state and expand the army, an existential threat to Germany.
