Lincoln's VP was a known abolitionist, he was known to be very close with abolitionists, whatever his statements on the issue, and the fact that he was elected without a single southern delegate voting for him. It could not be worse in their mind. The election had effectively isolated the south and made them totally irrelevant in federal politics due to the Democratic party split. Creating a new party wouldn't save them, the treacherous northern Democrats had condemned them to rule from the north, which could now elect presidents without the south's participation in the election.

Oregon and California verifiably would have gone to the Democrats if they didnt split their votes. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Illinois were also all in play.
