If drug usage was so common in the past such as medicine in the late 19th/early 20th centuries and it's widespread adoption by the wehrmacht during ww2, Why was there no MASSIVE epidemic of junkies afterwards?And how did they tolerate withdrawals?
Not as potent but there were multiple drug epidemics before the 70's, the cocaine epidemic in the late 19th and early 20th century is notable.

Junkies were typically ignored or shunned by society and there wasn't much research happening at that time anyway. Also it was taboo and even unknown among certain social circles, so some junkies were considered eccentric or brain damaged
