I'm reading the Odyssey rn and I'm struck by how much more majestic and less provincial this depiction of Zeus is compared to YHWH.The popcultural image of Zeus is that of the archetypal sky daddy, but here he's always described as in a completely different league from the other gods as well as implied to actually be omnipotent and omniscient. Unlike YHWH who constantly spergs out, Homer's Zeus is stoic and magnanimous. He could enforce his will whenever he wanted to, but he prefers to manipulate the other gods as pieces in his 4d chess game. I'm reading Pope's translation btw, idk if that matters.
>>18176499>I'm reading the OdysseyIdk why I wrote that lol, meant the Iliad.
>>18176499You're right. I'm always fascinated by how he's depicted by lesser known authors too. Looking at reading Julian's religious writings sometime.
good for you. worship Zeus.
He turns himself into a swan to rape women.
>>18176680Not in Homer. That's apocrypha. It's like how Maccabees says jews are actually Greeks so they just pretend it doesn't exist lmao
>>18176499Thalassocracies and their ilk, like hugely successful maritime cultures tend to produce more soulful gods and lore in general. Job is the only book of the Bible that really touches the nature of God, for me at least. And how rotten mankind is.
>>18176861>Job's God:>Satan is just my agent>I can fuck up humans whenever I want to>I created Behemoth and Leviathan just to wrestle with them
>>18176883Makes since desu. He is a one-eyed crazy bastard to have formed this all as he has. I'd fight him right now if I could.
>>18176889Look. Look at this. He has even denied me my digits. Are we going to pretend that God is not on the most petty bullshit streak ever?
>implied to actually be omnipotent and omniscientlmaohe was literally fooled by men, who Prometheus taught to put the meat from a sacrificed bull into its stomach while the bones were covered with fatZeus chose the bones instead of the meat, because he did not perceive the bones through the fat on the outsideand that's why the Greeks got to eat the meat from the sacrifice of bulls to Zeusthis infuriated Zeus, who in response took fire away from manwhen Prometheus stole it and gave it back to men, Zeus chained him to a mountain to have his liver ripped out by an eagle every day forever
>>18176499I will admit, even after over 2000 years and read through by now so many different layers of translation, the narrative culminating in the final showdown of Achilles and Hector is still the most impressive thing I've ever read
>>18176905Over 3000
I know I can instantly discount what some guy says about the religion the moment he reduced any one figure to "skydaddy". Way to throw yourself under the bus
>>18176909yeah I had a retard moment. I'm nostalgic for when it was only 2000 years old though
>>18176499Aside from the rapey bits, He really is quite majestic and mostly just plays the referee/judge when the gods get in fights and cause problems. Otherwise, the doesn't really care what the wife and kids are doing, so long as he gets some BBQ and libations from time to time. "What does Daddy get? The big piece of chicken."
>>18176904yhwh loses track of the only people ever made about an hour after he made them despite bein in a garden the size of a public park. Not very "omni" anything. Don't get me started on the "iron chariots" and all the other times he gets BTFO. Literally too many to count.
>>18176946Stoic and magnanimous are not words you should use to describe Zeus. You clearly know next to nothing about his characterization, whereas I have been reading Greek mythology since I was in elementary school.
>>18176900>He has even denied me my digits. You got them back after the test. Just like Job!
>>18176998>whereas I have been reading Greek mythology since I was in elementary schoolWe all were.
>>18176904>>18176998This thread is specifically about Homer's Zeus in the Iliad.
