They do this because most of them do not know their own history and nor did their forefathers since they came from many different tribes and nations that were all dissolved into one "black" group in the new world, their languages faded away and their captors had no interest in teaching them their history so that they may feel an attachment to something else. They were also imbued with a sense of inferiority by their new captors and the new racial caste system they found themselves at the bottom of. In subsequent years they developed folk lore explaining their origin, wanting more dignity than merely being a race of slaves so they turned to the only African group they had really ever heard of which was the Egyptians and their most famous leader, Cleopatra who they decided were their ancestors since these were the only Africans they really knew about. In the Carribean they became obsessed with Ethiopia as it was the only unconquered African nation, thus they created rastafarianism which declared Haile Selassie to be the second Christ. After the Egyptian obsession they started adding random other groups in, like the Moors (also African so its probably the 2nd most popular), the jews and then just totally random groups like native Americans. Ultimately by doing this they are betraying their own ancestors and insulting their memory by claiming to be something than they are, which is a mix of west and central African ethnicities. In my view the solution would be for nations with diaspora blacks in the new world to teach a little bit about the histories of the various African groups before their transportation to America. This would give them a sense of pride and a more realistic outlook on history
