There's no evidence to support the idea that their diplomacy was a mask for anything, or a cynical attempt to exploit anybody. While it never actually happened there's no credible reason to believe that they wouldn't have kept their word and abided peacefully by their agreements. I know that's bizarre in history, but it's a long way from impossible.
