Australian serial killer William MacDonald cut a swathe of destruction through Queensland and New South Wales, Australia in the early 1960s. MacDonald was born as Allen Ginsberg in Liverpool, England on June 17, 1924, one of three children of a well-to-do English Jewish family. Allen was reportedly the black sheep of the family, exhibiting antisocial tendencies from childhood; he liked to wander off at night and walk around town by himself, causing his panicked mother to call police to bring him back. He was friendless and as a child, diagnosed as schizophrenic. He was drafted into the British army during World War II and assigned to the Lancashire Fusiliers. One evening Ginsberg was anally sodomized by an air raid shelter by a C/O who threatened to kill him if he told anyone, an experience that left him mentally scarred for life.

Ginsberg served four years in the army and was discharged in 1947, at which point he was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic and put in a medieval-style mental hospital in Scotland filled with yelling, ranting patients put in unheated cells. He was treated with electroshock therapy every day for six months until his mother got him out. Although Ginsberg realized he was gay, it was not possible for him to live as an openly gay man in those much more conservative times and he was unable to hold down a job and often laughed at by coworkers.
>>
He changed his name to William MacDonald and moved to Canada in 1949 where he spent six years before moving to Australia. Shortly after arriving there, he was arrested in a vice squad operation in a public restroom in Adelaide when he tried to fondle a man he believed was homosexual, but turned out to be an undercover cop. MacDonald got two years probation. He moved to Ballarat, then to Sydney in 1961 where he began working as a construction worker. MacDonald actively cruised public parks and restrooms for gay encounters during this time.

He committed his first murder in Brisbane the same year when he befriended 63 year old Amos Hurst outside a train station. The two men got drunk at a pub, went to Hurst's apartment, and drank some more. MacDonald began strangling Hurst, who was almost blackout drunk and unaware of what was happening. The older man began bleeding from his nose and mouth, so MacDonald punched him in the face and killed him. He partially undressed Hurst, wrapped him in a sheet, and left the apartment. On June 4, police received a report of a dead body in the Sydney Domain Baths. The male victim, identified as 41 year old Alfred Greenfield, was nude, stabbed 30 times, and his penis amputated.
>>
Like with Amos Hurst, Greenfield had been accosted by MacDonald, offered alcohol, and lured to the Domain Baths. Once he was extremely intoxicated, MacDonald stabbed him 30 times, cutting his carotid artery. After that, he cut off his penis, put it in a plastic bag, and threw it in Sydney Harbor. On November 22, Ernest Cobbin, 37, was found dead in a public toilet in Moore Park, stabbed and mutilated. MacDonald had encountered Cobbin on South Dowling Street, lured him to Moore Park, and drank beer with him. He put on a raincoat and then stabbed Cobbin in the neck, cutting the jugular vein--the purpose of wearing the raincoat was to shield his clothes from blood splatter. Cobbin fought back but MacDonald continued to stab him. After he was dead, he amputated his penis, put it in a bag with the knife, went home, and washed himself up.

On March 31, 1962, MacDonald had purchased a knife from a sporting goods store in Sydney and stalked Frank McLean in Darlinghurst. He caught up to him and asked if they wanted to have a drink in Bourke Lane where MacDonald began stabbing him in the throat. McLean fought back but was heavily intoxicated. A couple with a baby in a stroller approached, which caused MacDonald to abort the attack and flee. As soon as the coast was clear, MacDonald came back, stabbed him again until he was dead, cut off his penis, put it in a plastic bag, and left. The couple with the baby then came back around and saw McLean's body laying by the side of the street. A team of detectives were on the scene in 30 minutes but the killer had still gotten away. They initially speculated that he must be a doctor or someone else with medical training due to the clean, surgical way the victims' genitals were severed; nobody could remember a murder case in Australia with this degree of mutilation and sadism.

Australian authorities even tried contacting their counterparts in other countries for any reports of similar crimes; one suspect was a US Army serviceman who'd been charged in West Germany with a similar mutilation murder of a 13 year old boy. A 23 year old German immigrant in Melbourne was also detained and questioned as a possible suspect. Neither of these leads went anywhere.

On April 14, a Royal Australian Air Force serviceman, Patrick Royan, reported that he'd been attacked by the Mutilator on Goulburn Street. The attacker chased him with a knife, but he scaled a fence and got away from him, but did nick him with the knife. Royan said the attacker was making unusual hissing sounds, was tall, relatively well-built, swarthy in appearance, in his 30s, and wore a light colored suit. This lead also went nowhere when it came out that Royan was an alcoholic under psychiatric treatment who just made up the story for attention. He was charged with filing a false police report and sentenced to 18 months in jail.

MacDonald worked for a time at a post office under the name Alan Brennan, but was fired after a short time and then started his own business. He bought a general store on Burwood Road in Concord using the same assumed name and lived in an apartment above the store. On June 6, MacDonald went to a saloon on Pitt Street in Sydney where he met Patrick Hackett, a 37 year old ex-con who had just gotten out of prison. The two went to MacDonald's place and got drunk. He then took a knife out and thrust it into Hackett's neck. Hackett tried to fight back and shoved MacDonald, pushing the knife into his hand and badly cutting him. MacDonald instead thrust the knife into Hackett's heart and continued stabbing until he became winded and had to pause for breath. The knife was bent by the force of the attacks and he was unable to use it to amputate Hackett's genitals. He instead just stabbed at them a few times before giving up and nodding off to sleep.
>>
MacDonald woke up the next day and found himself laying next to Hackett's body in a pool of dried blood, which was soaking into the floorboards and almost down into his store downstairs. He washed up and went to a hospital to have the cut on his hand treated. MacDonald claimed he cut himself at work. He cleaned up the apartment and moved Hackett's body underneath the shop. Assuming police would be searching for Hackett, he fled to Brisbane. Customers going to the shop to get their dry cleaning done noticed that Mr. Brennan had disappeared without a trace. Three weeks later, neighbors noticed a bad smell coming from the shop. Within a month, it had gotten so bad that they contacted the health department, who got police to break inside where they discovered the remains of Patrick Hackett, but they were in poor condition and could not be identified. They assumed the decedent was the shop owner, "Alan Brennan", since he had inexplicably vanished a few weeks ago, and no connection was made with the three "Mutilator" murders. His death was listed as a suicide despite no obvious indication of how he could have died and his former colleagues at the post office held a small memorial service for him, unaware that he was alive and well in Brisbane and had departed for New Zealand.
>>
MacDonald did not feel comfortable murdering in his new home and preferred the safe and familiar territory of Sydney, so he soon flew back there where he encountered former co-worker John McCarthy who said "I thought you died. If you're still alive, then whose body was it they found under your shop? And why'd you run away?" MacDonald fled to Melbourne. McCarthy went to police with his tale, but they dismissed him as crazy and probably drunk when he thought he saw "Alan Brennan." Still unable to convince them, McCarthy went to the Daily Mirror offices and talked with crime reporter Joe Morris, who typed up a story titled "Case of the Walking Corpse." The news headline compelled police to dig up the corpse and it was confirmed through fingerprints to be that of Patrick Hackett. Futher, the body was stabbed and mutilated, including in the genital area.

A lookout was put out for MacDonald, who had now taken a job on the Melbourne railways under the name "David Allan." He tried disguising his appearance but was soon recognized and arrested as he tried to collect his weekly paycheck. Police were surprised to find a thin, wispy man under six feet in height; they expected a powerful, muscled man with great physical strength.
>>
Taken into custody, MacDonald readily confessed and said he did it because of being raped by a homosexual man during his World War II service in England and that voices in his head told him to kill. He went on trial in September 1963 and it was a sensational case, attracting national headlines in Australia. MacDonald pled innocent by reason of insanity and described his crimes in graphic detail, even describing what he did with the victims' severed genitals. Some people in the courtroom became nauseated and had to be excused. The jury found him guilty of five counts of first degree murder and the judge said it was the most barbaric and inexcusable crime he'd ever encountered in his years on the bench. MacDonald showed no remorse and made it clear that he would gladly do it again. He was sentenced to life in prison with the strong recommendation of no parole.

MacDonald was imprisoned in Long Bay Correctional Centre for a short period, but was soon ruled insane and moved to a mental hospital. In 1980, he was moved back to prison and put in the protective custody wing where he spent his days quietly reading and listening to classical music. Although MacDonald was eligible for parole by 2000, he was uninterested in getting out of prison; at age 76, he believed there was no point in it and he had become too acclimatized to an institutional setting to be able to live on the outside again. He was granted short day trips to Newcastle.

MacDonald died of an intestinal obstruction at the age of 90 on May 12, 2015, one of the longest-serving prisoners in Australia.

no transcontinental air travel back then, this would have been a very long slow ride on a ship

>>18221039
actually even in 62 he probably went to New Zealand by ship as transcontinental air travel was just new, the Boeing 707 had only recently entered service

I know when the Bee Gees moved from England to Australia in the mid-60s they traveled by ship and a lot of the older passengers there did not like their Beatles records when they played them.

Early 707s also didn't have the range for a continuous flight from North America to Australia. Later models could fly up to 6,000 miles.

Australia is a boring place, only the occasional serial killer for any exciting news stories.
