There are equations to determine the volume of fire a given position can deliver over a given frontage for a given period of time. This translate in a volume of men below which the position is "just fine" and neutralize the threat exponentially faster the less men you send at it, up to a point where you know the "entry price" of attacking a position, that is the minimum amount of men below which you won't even make it to the enemy position and also the minimum amount of men that you will lose simply for trying.It's not a hard science but we can thanks centuries of prussian, french, british and then american trials, errors and studies for this.Short version for the uninformed officers on the ground : go all in or don't go at all.But you are right that it might sometimes be beneficial to spread enemy fire on several directions or to focus it away from a specific direction so at least part of your forces get through.
