The problem with Russia is that people instinctively equate big territory=strong country, further compounded by how translating an orb into a plane make them look even bigger than they truly are.
By the end of the day Russia is what you get when you conquer dozens of low tier countries while having a border with Europe, you will have lots of slaves and raw resources you can sell to buy the items and knowledge to pretend you are a westerner too.
