I live in the Detroit metro and see a lot of Muslim guys assimilate to American popular culture—sportsball fandom, hip hop, consoomerism, drugs and alcohol on the downlow, and in some ways not so different from the blacks and white chuds around them, though they also have their food and family thing. Then there’s the ones who don’t. Hamtramck a few decades ago was a mostly Polish enclave but now it’s Yemeni, Bangladeshi and other Muslims. They totally control the city government and last year banned rainbow flags in public spaces. Other Muslim groups have formed uneasy alliances with Christian fundies to get gay stuff out of the schools.
