and now there are a lot of genuine crazies who probably belong in a place like that but are walking free everywhere, maybe even encouraged to and mental hospitals are barely a thing.

The problem is that you're legally not allowed to force someone into a mental asylum, they need someone with power of attorney to sign off on it, which a lot of them do, but not everyone, either because nobody is stepping foreword or because they don't think it's the right course of action. And of course a lot of people with severe mental illness don't want to just stay put in one place anyways whether that's in a mental hospital or at a caretakers home so they end up on the streets

Society in general treated them as disposable. As cold hearted as it sounds, most people would probably prefer if people with mental illness were simply euthanized, and it's partially why eugenics became such a hot topic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but in many cases mental hospitals were the next best thing, and patients being treated like shit was probably an open secret that everyone just chose to be ignorant about because it provided some level of catharsis knowing these genetic rejects were being treated like shit instead of walking around in public making everyone's lives worse by existing

I always see at least one posturing retard who always says this whenever this topic is brought up, but let's be realistic, they were likely put in their for one legitimate reason or another, even the most retarded families don't just decide you should be thrown in a looney bin, most likely you have something wrong with you that makes you difficult to be around.
I see this shit all the time on the internet too, where a lot of people who say that their lives are shit because of their families or the government or something of the sort, they're then pressed to give details and elaborate, and the response is always them oversharing their lives and exposing that they're actually just mentally ill. The system is failing because the hospitals don't take as many legit cases anymore and would rather just take in a bunch of criminals who were able to act just crazy enough to make them seem unfit for trial. We created asylums initially as a genuine response to a public health crisis, later it became an easy way to ensure that problematic people were put on psychiatric medicine that essentially obliterated their synapses. When cheap and easily available synthetic drugs became common place they realized they didn't need to put those types in a special institution in order to lobotomize them. The main purpose of asylums was to keep insane people off the streets. Today they're basically "racharge" stations for "depressed" people who need a break from the stress of everyday life.
