Scott Mink was the 14th person executed by Ohio since 1976--this overaged teenager murdered his aging parents in 2000 in an argument over drug money. Mink was born in Union, a Dayton suburb, on October 13, 1963, the last of five children of William and Sheila Mink, who were 42 and 35 when he arrived. Not much is known about Scott's childhood, but he graduated high school in 1981 and took some college classes at Sinclair Community College. Other than that, he never dated and lived with his parents until their demise. Mink had a history of depression and suicide attempts and by the 1990s had become addicted to crack cocaine. He had been hospitalized several times and in the final months before the murders attempted suicide several times. At the time of the murder, Scott was working at Ferrell Gas in Dayton. He did not have a criminal record until shortly before the murders; on July 13, 2000, he stole several appliances and some computer hardware from his employer's offices and sold them for crack money. Mink was charged with the theft on July 20 and received six months of probation. His frustrated parents continued to treat him as if he was still 13 and he often resented it.William told his son he had to be home by 10:00 PM and sometimes hid the keys to his Isuzu Trooper. Scott complained about this and that his parents would not let him have more than $20 in spending money. By 2000, they were 79 and 72 and sought to move into a smaller apartment that would be more senior-friendly, and let it be known that Scott would have to find somewhere else to live. When his brother Bill asked him where he planned to move to, he replied "Kind of nasty like. Don't worry about it, I've got a plan."
On September 19, Mink drove to the apartment of a friend named Bryan Werling where they drank and smoked crack together. William called his son on the phone and sternly reminded him he had to be home by ten. Mink told Werling he'd better be going. He came back to his parents' apartment at 10:00 PM and waited for his parents to go to sleep. Mink then decided to go out and score more drugs, but couldn't find his car keys and realized his parents must have hidden them, which caused him to "completely lose it." He walked into the bedroom at around 11:20 and saw them asleep in there. Mink took a claw hammer and bashed their heads with it so hard that the handle broke. He went and got two kitchen knives and an extension cord and stabbed them several times, breaking one knife; the other was left in his mother's chest. Mink also strangled her with the cord and beat both of them with two cutting boards. After he was done, Mink showered and put on fresh clothes. He took $7 and his parents' credit cards. Mink located his car keys, drove to an ATM, and took out $10 from his father's account. He bought $20 worth of crack, only to find after getting it home that it was fake and he'd been tricked. Mink swallowed 5-6 of his mother's tranquilizers and nodded off to sleep, not waking up until afternoon the next day. He moved his father's body off the bed and put it over top his mother's body and covered both with blankets. Mink then took his father's '95 Escort and sold it to a drug dealer for $100 worth of crack. The next day he hocked their TV to an acquaintance for $30 worth of crack. He bought cigarettes, beer, and milk with is father's credit card and then called the same acquaintance to offer him some furniture items, a microwave oven, and a watch. Mink claimed his parents were on vacation and wanted him to clean out the garage.
Scott's four siblings often called their parents to check up on them and became concerned when their calls on September 20 went unanswered. His sisters decided to go to the apartment the next day and see what was happening--at their current age, it was quite possible that they'd suffered a medical emergency of some kind. They pulled into the driveway and found Scott walking inside. They pounded on the door and asked him to come out. He answered but said they couldn't come in and he didn't know where their parents were. They ran off to call police. Scott's sister Cheryl saw him walking to his truck, went up, and demanded the keys to the apartment. She asked "Scott, did you hurt Mom and Dad?" "No," was the reply. Scott gave them the keys and left. Cheryl and his other sister Christine entered the apartment. They did not immediately realize their parents' bodies were covered with blankets, but they knew something was amiss because William's glasses and billboard were on the dresser even though his car was gone. They went to get police.Union PD officer Darrin Goudy entered the apartment and found William and Sheila's bodies inside. He immediately radioed for the homicide unit. William was stacked on top of Sheila, where Scott had left them, and there was blood everywhere. The gruesome evidence of the murders was all around the bedroom and on the bodies. Various home appliances and furnishings were missing from the apartment. A pair of bloody sneakers and a T-shirt were found in Scott's bedroom. Examination of phone records found that Mink had talked to his friend James Ornduff three times on the night of September 19-20. Police contacted Ornduff and recovered the items taken from the apartment. Also, examination of William and Sheila's credit card records showed their use for several purchases. William's Escort was also located and traces of blood were found inside.
After departing from the apartment, Mink had stayed at a farm near Tipp City. On the 24th, he turned himself into local police and said he "did something awful and woke up in a field somewhere west of Tipp City." He confessed in full to the murders.Autopsy of the Minks found that William was stabbed 13 times, beaten over the head another 13 times, and had four other beating injuries to his body. Despite his age, William, who had served in the Marines during World War II, was a tough old bird and had not gone down without a fight; his body had defensive wounds. Sheila had been beaten in the head none times, stabbed four times in the chest and back, and had 33 smaller lacerations. The knife was left in her chest and had punctured 4-6 inches into the right lung. She also had a broken hyoid bone from strangulation and was alive when all these injuries were inflicted.Scott Mink was charged with two counts of aggravated first degree murder during the commission of a robbery. He immediately pled guilty and waived his right to a jury trial. A three judge panel sentenced him to death. Mink declined to appeal his sentence and was executed by lethal injection on July 20, 2004 after a last meal consisting of a T-bone steak; baked potato with sour cream and butter; steamed broccoli and cauliflower; a hamburger with cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato, ketchup and mustard; french fries with extra salt and a Pepsi, all of which he ate except the broccoli. His siblings witnessed the execution, which was the quickest since Ohio resumed capital punishment in 1999. A crowd of 20 anti-death penalty protesters protested outside the prison and the parole board got letters from as far away as England urging his sentence to be commuted.
