So Columbus was considered a piece of shit even in his own time. Why was there any debate about changing the holiday to indigenous people? I thought people were just projecting today's morals on him, but he was literally removed from his post for being a piece of shit.

Can you explain that a bit more?

Keep in mind that the vast majority of Americans only learn the elementary school Columbus narrative in which he is a cool visionary and big hero.

>Why was there any debate about changing the holiday to indigenous people?
because its treated as an italian american day, so italian americans get defensive about it

There's a statue of Columbus in my city that was put up in 2005 by the Italian American society.

What does that even mean?

Yeah, it isn't like mass media existed in the 1490s. He had a falling out with a bunch of his crew members and the King and Queen were annoyed that he was sending Natives back to Spain for slavery (which Spain didn't need) instead of copious amounts of gold promised after his original voyage. That's not the same as "considered a piece of shit even in his own time".

>replacing columbus day is seen as woke virtue signaling for natives when columbus day existing at all was woke virtue signalling for italians

Along with the myth that he was the one who discorved the world was round. I'm a Zoomie and was still taught that in Kindergarden sometime circa 2010. Why the fuck is that still being taught?

Columbus Day was created in the aftermath of the 1891 mass lynching of Italians in New Orleans as a virtue signal—“hey, Italians, Catholics and Ellis Island immigrants are Americans too!” It’s similar to Thanksgiving, another made up holiday to decenter our origin myth from Jamestown and slavery and promote a myth of harmony with natives. Well intentioned celebrations created by the liberals of the era now seen as glorifying genocide.

By everybody or just by de las Casas?

Minor character flaw vs massive achievement
It's like the people that gossiped and hated on Admiral Nelson because of his affair with Lady Hamilton

Better question, why are you demanding Europeans to be ashamed of themselves and think we need to celebrate some alien race instead of making holidays focusing on European exploration and creation of a European civilization on the Americas that elevated human society to the point we landed on the moon because of it.

Why do you think an alien has a right to advocate for that?

I don't think OP is advocating for Anglos here.
