The fucked up truth is that serial killers never boomed in the 70’s to 90’sThey existed in the exact same numbers. Forensic science just reached a critical mass where they got caught easier, at the same time mass media reached its own critical mass where focusing on violent crime was prime time material, so serial killers who could kill anybody and looked like normal people became superstarsSerial killers before this either got away with it, or got caught and executed (often without people ever learning they killed like 20 others). The two major factors were demographic boom which meant there's a lot of young people(if you exclude everyone younger than 45 you've cut crime by like 90%). Second is that the crime system was completely unprepared to deal with a would be serial killer. My favourite example was the guy who tried to strangle and rape a girl but she ran away and then got slap on the wrist from the judge which he followed with rape and murder spree. Only then justice has found him.Maybe not as blatant as that but most serial killers accumulated some infractions over the course of their life before starting to kill. There's an anon making occasional threads about them, read them whenever you see them. A more heavy handed justice system simply puts them in jail much earlier and for much longer and they don't have time to escalate between cooldowns. Obviously investigative methods have gotten better too, you need really dedicated individual to make it hard to track you(Daniel Marsh, had he not bragged about killing his victims would probably be one of these), but I think the main point is that they get isolated from the society earlier. This works especially well for the ones with a sexual angle.

Mass shooters and serial killers have completely different psychologies, motives, etc. Serial killers did not become mass shooters.
