What benefit did it give to science? Is it still relevant for people today, or is it completely in the trashbin of history after the heliocentric model became dominant?

The epicycles are so beautiful, they fascinate me

Earth-centered coordinate systems are still being used because we live on Earth and it makes sense to have this planet as our "fixed" point (for example GPS). But Sun-centered coordinate systems are also being used.

Oh, geodesy came from the heliocentric model? I guess that makes sense. What about spatial reference systems that relate earth to other astronomical bodies?

>geodesy came from the heliocentric model?
Geodesy, as the science of measuring and determining the geometric proportions of Earth, has its roots in acient Greece and the geocentric model.
>What about spatial reference systems that relate earth to other astronomical bodies?
What about them? The Galactic Coordinate System places our Sun at its centre because, again, it is the most relatable "fixed point" for humanity.

It's still used in certain kinds of esotericism because of its role as the model through which human beings experience the cosmos.
I use it so much I honestly forget that the heliocentric model exists 90% of the time.

Is it used in mainstream astrology, for the horoscopes?

> I use it so much I honestly forget that the heliocentric model exists 90% of the time.

Oh wow… for all we know, some exoplanet governs the gravitational field which moves all the planets. It’s fascinating how little we really know after all this time

You can track stars in the sky I guess.

The charts are cast geocentrically, although astrologers are aware of the heliocentric model. Also, the astrological meaning of things uses the geocentric model. For example, the "seventh heaven" is that of Saturn, and traditionally it sets the limit of creation. This has contributed to the meaning of Saturn in astrology. And this is so because, in the geocentric model, the sphere of Saturn is the seventh from earth, right between earth and the fixed stars.

I forgot to say, for the same reason the geocentric model is also used in magic and theurgy, both in the past and today.

Damn, really?
Also fun fact: the "classic" heliocentric model has been outdated since the 18th century as it stipulated that the sun was the center of the universe.

Does it?

With the gravity of larger bodies outside the solar system, would that invalidate the general heliocentric model of the solar system?
>>

>Damn, really?
Yeah. The geocentric model is very compatible with a lot of philosophical and ritual models, so it plays a large role in my spiritual life. Celestial magic as a whole is completely dependant on the geocentric model, because you are calling upon the powers of the various celestial spheres, which wouldn't make any sense in non-geocentric models of the world.
>>
>>18242163
No. Our Sun is still the prime gravitational center of our solar system and nowadays when the term "heliocentric model" is used most people associate it with "the Earth moves around the Sun", which is correct. The first iterations of the heliocentric model on the other hand stipulated that our Sun is the center of the universe.
>>18242221
I see - that makes sense of course. Much like GPS being based on a geocentric model. Do you really practice such rituals/magic in your daily life?
>>
>>18242448
>Do you really practice such rituals/magic in your daily life?
Yeah, although it's not exactly my daily life. I practice astrological magic, which means I pick appropriate auspicious times for my rituals. The next good opportunity to do something that would be useful to me is in mid January IIRC.
>>
>>18242742
What do you do with those rituals? I'm seldomly moved by religious/spiritual matters and just can't wrap my head around those deeds.
I mean, I understand why people belonging to the larger organised religions pray and go to their church/temple services but when it comes to those smaller or individual methods of worship I'm tapping in the dark.
