>Sherman knew Hooker from the old army and in his memoirs gave a detailed list of flaws and shortcomings in his character and style of command. A few weeks before the Chancellorsville campaign was to start, he remarked "The idea of Hooker commanding 100,000 troops against Lee makes me shudder slightly."[8]

Hooker was just a little overmatched as an army commander, even though he proved excellent at logistics. Very few ACW generals had the right balance of willingness to take risks, ability to adapt to unforseen circumstances, and level-headedness, really just Lee, Grant, Sherman, and Thomas had those qualities.
