Would have worked, prospered the Principato d'Elba?

Why Napoléon wanted to return and rebuild THE clusterfuck (big countries had / have / will never work) instead of enjoying life and developing this comfy island into a Monaco 2.0?

I would have love to live in this "Novo Monaco".

I get that, but how Napoléon thought that France could recover itself?

At least in Elba he could have built a prosper Bonapartist merchant empire that, perhaps with time, could bring him back to France in a peaceful way, like Napoléon III did it.

Or instead, he could have became a key factor in Italy's reunification, a second Bonapartist empire but in Italy (including Corsica) instead of France.

Elba is a shitty little island with at best some iron mines and nothing else, Monacos rise to wealth began in the late 19th century which coincided with the emerging tourism and gambling industries and Napoleon was at heart a political gambler - go big (Emperor of France) or go home (whatever punishment the coalition would bestow upon him next).

Elba couldn't compete with the existing ports in the mediterranean.
