The Mongols just became Tsars. Ivan the Terrible's mother was a Genghisid princess... He literally had the blood. The independence was a palace coup, swapping a distant Khan for a local one. The entire Russian state project... autocracy, tribute system, expansionism... is just a baptized Mongol Ulus playing a long game.
