was Tropico better or worse before or after El Presidente?

Better because the I improve infrastructure and services, creat high-paying jobs, raise wages, and hold fair elections.

The game kind of misses the mark traying to portray itself as a corrupt dictator simulator when the optimal way to to play is just being a normal, basically democatic leader.

I only played 3, are the newer ones worth it?

3/4 are peak Tropico, 4 has fun campaign & modern times DLC.
I pirated 6 and had fun with it, but it gets tedious. Has no campaign, but a ton of different scenarios. 4 different era with different mechanics/options, and a trade route system that Tropico 5 introduced.

Me when I max out income with mining & industry, everyone except environmentalists are happy. Still shoot randoms just for fun.

4 kind of tried to incentivize the player to act more dictatory with the Loyalist faction, but it still wasn't really worth it. They should have implemented some mechanism where higher class people want to loot from the treasury and abuse workers, and if they cannot do that they might coup you.

Tropico is one of those games where you basically have to set your own silly goals or do despotic evil things for the fun of it, the game doesn't force you, but it does leave the door open.

Also i've seen some builds using edicts and corruption that are pretty OP honestly. There isn't really a right or wrong way to play.

Life under El Presidente was great, a literal paradise on earth mi amigo. After the CIA assassinated him and installed Penultimo, things were never the same again.
