How did Christmas go from being about the birth of a rabbi to being about Santa Clause, Christmas trees, magical snowmen, and so on? From what I can tell, most of the things we associate with Christmas only came into existence in the last two-hundred years.

Also, the authorities usually don't like rowdy gatherings so when it became convinient, governments were happy to discourage it. By the end of the Victorian era, the family home bacame the place you spend most of your free time, and there was a lot of propaganda about familial bliss (again, partially to encourage people to stay at home and not cause trouble), much of it concerning Christmas, hence it becoming a family holiday.
