And remember he only died because he was prancing around the frontlines unarmored to inspire the troops. It's inexcusable, his little stunt was the end of the empire's post-Diocletian upswing. And ironically his reign only accelerated the Christian takeover, because it now looked to everyone that God had punished him and the empire for this apostasy.
