Nevertheless most stories in Genesis serve to demonstrate the consequences of disobeying the legal and moral statues expressed later in the Torah. Adam and Eve are about disobeying God’s commands, straightforward. It’s a reference to Ezekiel, actually. The idea is that if you disobey you get exiled, which is what allegedly happened to the Israelites for being immoral. Another example is Sodom and Gomorrah, another critique in Ezekiel. It was less about buttfucking and more about violating xenia, or hospitality to strangers. It was a huge taboo in the Mediterranean back then and Jews were often known to murder people who came into their lands. Onan and Tamar. Not about masturbation, but about not fulfilling the commandment of Levirate marriage. Onan took Tamar as a wife and his brother’s wealth too, but refused to have children, thus committing a grave injustice. If you’re ever confused about a story in the Bible it probably has something to do with a Torah statute. Promise you it’s that straightforward. I've heard the theory that a poet wrote it, it's obsessed with family dynamics and small scale tragedies. Many of the characters (even the snake in the garden of Eden) God punishes them and then blesses them after like a regular folk fable instead how the rest of the bible is written.
