I hate whenever I see this image posted because it's at best a complete failure in communication and at worst a deliberate attempt at poisoning the well.The massive problem with the image is that we as the readers are very aware of the fact that while using children as metaphors, it's actually talking about groups in society and state/societal policy... but the metaphor doesn't actually work, because there are key differences between the dynamics of 3 children and the dynamics of an entrie society.If we talk about the literal, actual scenario of the 3 children, with no room for metaphor, then child B makes the most sense to me, because assuming nobody is lying, child B is alredy in posession of the flute and has always been, and so any meddling would involve stealing a flute from a child who made it. BUT, if we then get tricked into accepting that this logic should be applied 1:1 to society as policy, we are tricked into accepting WILD conclusions, like rejecting all taxes, all social programs, arguably the entire system of justice ect, largely because you can't take a fraction of a flute.But if we rework the text to be what it's metaphorically saying, change child A to artists as a group, child B to flute manufacturers, and child C to the downtrodden, the solution is obvious, and it's the solution the vast majority of adults recognise as sensible: taxIf child B is cranking out 1000 flutes a day, there is no reason why we can't take, for example, 3%, and try to cover A and C's needs with those. The entire logic falls apart once as part of the discussion you recognise the metaphor just doesn't work, but every time the thread is posted, dishonest bad actors flood the thread with posts that pretend a reaction to the literal child dilemma is equivalent to real policies and try to argue for or against those policies based on an obviously and painfully flawed model.On a proper discussion website, these thread would be locked.
