Robert Glock was the 51st person Florida executed since 1976. In 1983, he and his friend Carl Puiatti kidnapped, robbed, and murdered a schoolteacher in Bradenton. Glock was born May 22, 1961. His childhood was reportedly marred by abuse and neglect, mainly from his mother who seldom did anything during her waking hours but drink. Glock's sister Tammy claimed their mother would vomit all over herself and they would have to clean her up before their stepfather came home from work and found out. If they didn't do this she would get angry and beat them. She also forced Robert to go to school in girls' clothes. He tried to sneak normal outfits in his backpack but his mother would beat him if she caught him. Tammy Glock also said she basically resented Robert because she hated his biological father. He wasn't even allowed to play with other children and tried to run away from home several times. Glock ended up in a foster home at 13 and then went to live with his father in Florida.

Unfortunately, that didn't improve his lot at all because his stepmother also resented him and was abusive to him. Due to his small size, he became easily dependent on others and easy to lead into destructive actions. Even so, Glock had no criminal history up until the murder.

On August 16, 1983, Sharilyn Ritchie, a 34 year old home ec teacher from Manatee County, stopped her car in the parking lot of the DeSoto Square Shopping Mall in Bradenton. She taught at Palmetto High School and was currently on a year's leave to have a baby. Her husband Larry had formerly been a baseball coach at the same school. Ritchie was approached by Glock and Puiatti. The latter was a year younger than Glock and currently on probation after a burglary conviction. They ordered Ritchie to get in her car at gunpoint and drive to an ATM where she withdrew $100 from her account. Ritchie pleaded with her captors to at least let her keep her wedding ring and her husband's baseball mitt, which she considered a valuable memento. Glock and Puiatti drove 60 miles north to Pasco County where they dropped off Ritchie in an orange grove near Dade City. They took her wedding ring anyway but let her keep several other items that were of no value to them including her purse, sun visor, and the baseball mitt.

They began to drive off, but then quickly realized that Ritchie could identify them so they decided to kill her. Glock and Puiatti turned around and began shooting at her with a .38 revolver. Ritchie was struck in the torso several times and managed to walk about ten feet before collapsing. The body was found a short time later; she was still clutching her husband's baseball mitt in her hands.

Glock and Puiatti then drove Ritchie's car all the way to New Jersey. On August 21, a state trooper stopped them near Trenton after being unable to read their license plate. Neither had a valid driver's license, so the officer asked to see their registration. Puiatti opened the glove compartment; the officer could see a handgun inside, which he promptly confiscated. He then asked if he could search the vehicle. They consented to the search and he found another gun inside. The trooper arrested them for unlawful firearm possession; the gun found in the glove box had been the one used to shoot Ritchie. After being taken into custody, they readily confessed to murdering Sharilyn Ritchie and told nearly identical accounts of it, with the exception of Puiatti claiming it was Glock's idea to shoot her and that he'd pulled the trigger.

The pair were tried the following year for first degree murder, robbery, and carjacking, and sentenced to death. The appeals dragged on over the years and by 2001 Glock was scheduled for execution. His public defender Terri Backhus claimed both Ritchie and Puiatti were victims of racial profiling and that New Jersey police purposely targeted Italian-Americans as they were considered likely to be involved with organized crime (Glock was not of Italian heritage, although he had dark hair and could be mistaken for being Italian). If they had been racially profiled, then much of the evidence used to convict them could be tossed. However, the trooper who pulled them over insisted he only did so because of their unreadable license plate and was unaware of their ethnic background.

Glock, whom psychiatrists had classified as a passive follower, expressed his regret for killing Mrs. Ritchie and said he wanted to die soon. He was executed January 11, 2001 as a crowd of around 20 anti-death penalty protesters demonstrated outside the prison, including his wife Sheila, whom he had met and married in prison.

Carl Puiatti remains on Florida's death row in 2025 awaiting execution.

Women don't know to raise kids. They know how to shit them out through (the ones at least that don't murder them in utero at least), but raising them is another issue altogether. Notice how single dads produce robust, productive children but single moms produce criminals? Very curious.

Also

Who writes this shit?

But even when the guy had a father it seems it was always mommy issues that set him off.

That was during the early 80s when the Feds were in an all-out war on the Mafia so the word had gone down to state and local cops to target anyone who looked Italian.
