Oliver Cromwell’s government had forbade the holiday from being celebrated after his overthrow of King Charles I, and this legislation applied to the colony of Massachusetts, which mandated a fine of 5 shillings, starting in 1659, for any violators

It was not until 1836 that Alabama became the first state to officially recognise Christmas as a holiday.

The last state to do so would be Oklahoma in 1907
