Matera is one of the oldest human settlements, tracing its history back around 10,000 years. People here literally live in dwellings carved into the mountains and once slept in the same rooms as their livestock. Italians used to call it "The Shame of Italy" because of how ugly it is and its backwards living conditions, until a German came by and called it genius and made it a UNESCO heritage site.
