While I realize that one of the distinctive elements of Roman Catholicism is that they follow the Pope's pronouncements on what is considered proper practice, what if the Pope himself goes off the rails? Is the Pope still to be followed, even if he preaches heresies?
>>18255250Christians have one Lord and he is the only begotten Son. A pope is to serve the body of Christ, but they no longer know God.
>>18255250Then you do what sedevacantists did and say he wasn't a valid pope in the first place and that the papal seat is empty.Or you could just be normal and reject Vatican I altogether like the Old Catholics.
>>18255250No, but Catholics are still obligated to acknoweldge him as the Pope and demand him to repent, he can't be overthrown. Many popes have been awful, but they're still acknwoledged as popes.
>>18255250They believe that can't possibly happen. When you show them examples of it in fact happening (Vatican II popes), mental gymnastics ensue.
>>18255250They either believe: that the Pope can't go off the rails (fucking ludicrous); or if the Pope does go off the rails that they will simply know it (Lutheranism with Extra steps).
>>18255250They believe that God will strike down a Pope before he can declare (ex cathedra) heresy to be dogma, and that multiple Popes have died due to such divine providence.

>>18255250Trump says stupid shit all the time but people still support him, why does everything the Pope says have to be perfect?
>>18255384This is why I don't understand the veneration of Pius XII. Clearly he had accelerated decay because he declared the Marian Dogma and that is why a Pope cannot declare him a Saint.
