America was NEVER a "Christian nation"

Was this during the Muslim-pirates thing when all the founders wrote letters saying "bro don't shank me?"

I've read Jefferson's "bro don't shank me" letter but didn't know about the Adams one.

Yes

the main characteristic of germanic nations that differentiates them from romance, hellenic or slav, is that never in their whole history, including up till now, they have never stopped a muslim invasion

It's been a long time but...

You know that old song like "to the shores of Tripoli?"

We had a war with Islamic pirates back when Thomas Jefferson & co. were still alive and the Founders tried to get out of the raids without a war by insisting since America wasn't technically a theocracy like Spain they were off-limits for jihad. (It didn't work.)

Some of the Fedora Shrek Reddit founder quotes are from them trying to get out of this through diplomacy (because we were a newborn country and didn't need a war) and this quote is so totally out-of-character for John Adams I figured it was from the Muslims-don't-shank-me-bro era. He was one of the more religious Founding Fathers (and his diary includes some C.S. Lewis-type stuff like wondering if Jesus Christ would have to redeem other planets.)

These are more in-character quotes for this guy (who was my favorite Founder years ago when I was young because he was one of the only abolitionists, and I've hated slavery since pic-related- yes I'm that old.)

"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

"Without religion, this world would be something not fit to be mentioned in polite company; I mean hell."

"24 [i.e. 25] SUNDAY.
Astronomers tell us, with good Reason, that not only all the Planets and Satellites in our Solar System, are inhabited, but all the unnumbered Worlds that revolve round the fixt Starrs are inhabited, as well as this Globe of Earth. If this is the Case all Mankind are no more in comparison of the whole rational Creation of God, than a point to the Orbit of Saturn. Perhaps all these different Ranks of Rational Beings have in a greater or less Degree, committed moral Wickedness. If so, I ask a Calvinist, whether he will subscribe to this Alternitive, "either God almighty must assume the respective shapes of all these different Species, and suffer the Penalties of their Crimes, in their Stead, or else all these Beings must be consigned to everlasting Perdition? "

25 [i.e. 26] MONDAY.
The Reflection that I penned Yesterday, appears upon the review to be weak enough. For 1st. we know not that the Inhabitants of other Globes have sinned. Nothing can be argued in this manner, till it is proved at least probable that all those Species of rational Beings have revolted from their rightful Sovereign. -- When I examine the little Prospect that lies before me, and find an infinite variety of Bodies in one Horizon of perhaps two miles diameter, how many Millions of such Prospects there are upon the Surface of this Earth, how many millions of Globes there are within our View, each of which has as many of these prospects upon its own surface as our Planet-great! and marvellous are thy works! &c."

He's correct, it was never a Christian nation even during the time of the Puritans. America has it's own unique religion, which is the American Religion, a syncretic faith that is an amalgamation of protestantism, rabbinc judaism, free masonry, and folk magic.

America in it's founding was a deliberately secular state.
To argue America is a Christian nation, you need to ignore our constitution, national mythology, and the whole of our 'founding fathers' and instead go back to talk about John Winthrop or the Great Awakening.

Interesting, weird but interesting
