I've been reading into some of the accounts of international brigade volunteers and its something else. Its mostly French and British upper middle class, highly educated elite zoomers who came to be communist out of the Great Depression and WW1 (events they were children during) seeing the old world as dying, and seeing communism as this glorious new path to utopia. Its all this weird blend optimistic idealism with bitter resentment at the same time. They all come across as really naive in either case. On top of that, you have this sort of cabal of old crusty communist agitators who are the leaders of these young kids. When the Spanish Civil War broke out, all these old geezers got these zoomers wipped up into a fury with rhetoric and these bullshit stories about epic adventure. Then when they got there it was a complete fucking mess. No one knew what they were doing, none of it was organized, it was basically antifa troons LARPing in an active battle zone and it was so bad that many of them were sent into war without any weapons. Like this story of this machine gun unit and only one dude in their entire squad had a gun, and that was his dad service pistol from WW1 that he took with them. Of course, all these kids got ripped to shreds by the Nationalist forces, it was basically a children's crusade. For all their harping on about the horrors of WW1 and calling out the capitalist propaganda they sent them all to die miserable deaths for no good reason and their supposed forward thinking ideals, the EXACT same shit happened to them. Most of them seemed to cope by just doubling down on their bullshit rhetoric. They clearly all had PTSD. I wonder if any historian has explored this aspect of the internationalist brigades?
