Sink or swim economics and lack of ethics in the food industry have driven farmer households in the US to being hyper competitive and unethical themselves to stay afloat and compete instead of actually offering a high quality alternative product to the consumer. That or they are incentivized to work for agricultural conglomerates who have no oversight when it comes to observing the product they make.The US food industry also has little to no actual regulations. Recalls happen every few months and they're preemptively announced to prevent lawsuits. The American diet will never be healthy because, like every other part of the country's domestic economy and industry, it is bloated with tools that the people in charge can use to deject accountability and tell the public "Not My Problem" when they find lead or flouride in their food.

There are entire stores and chains in the US whose mission statement is to sell complete slop that doesn't even taste good but has great presentation.
