Should communism be considered a secular cult rather than an actual ideology or economic theory? It’s been so totally debunked in the realm of economics and disproven in practice that treating it otherwise would be like treating Alchemy as a legitimate STEM field.

>>18257004Yeah but that doesn't mean it's not an "actual" ideology. Like what do you mean by ideology? What I mean is that I think Zizek was onto something in that all ideologies are at some level a fantasy structure that organizes how people experience their reality. This is him talking about Stalinism:https://youtu.be/S94NJPRwF0cThis is a different question from whether communism is effective or not. Or at least anymore.
One thing he says in that the function of "God" in communist ideology is replaced by "the people" (or "history"). Not actual people as in individuals but I mean a mythic reference point for the ideology. He uses the term "Big Other" to refer to that mythic reference point. Partly, it's a figure we think operates in the background controlling everything, and works like enactment of a norm, so that when one speaks of something as what "one" is expected to do or what "they" expect you to do as being the "it" that is expected to be done, one is expressing the force of the Big Other. So if I'm a communist and I shoot you in the back of the neck, that might make me feel stress or it raises some doubt in my mind, but I do it anyways because in my own subjective experience it's not really "me" shooting you, it's "historical necessity" that is shooting you or "the people" who are shooting you. The reality is that this is a fiction but it seems necessary for me to believe in it if I'm going to shoot you, or maybe I want to believe it and shoot you because I don't want that not to be the case. This is basically how ideology functions.See here on "the people" of which the leader within the communist ideological mindset is like a "servant of the people."https://youtu.be/FOhIHC_Nc6Q
