In the bad old days of Jim Crow, Southern states frequently applied capital punishment for non-homicidal rape but nearly all such instances involved an assault by a black male upon a white female, and Virginia was no exception to the rule. The mass execution of the Martinsville Seven in 1951 was the most notorious one as it gained national headlines but wasn't the last time the Old Dominion would do it. Three more black men would be executed for rape by the state and this practice was only formally abolished when the Supreme Court would ban capital punishment for offenses outside first degree rape in the 1970s.On May 5, 1951, only three months after the Martinsville Seven were executed, Albert Jackson, a 23 year old black parolee, accosted a 40 year old white waitress who was walking home from work in Charlottesville. The woman was dragged into an alley off Second Street and raped there. During this assault she fell into a pit and was badly injured. Jackson wasn't finished; he dragged the victim out and forced her to submit to a second act of rape when a beat cop saw him and interrupted him. He initially tried to deny the assault and claimed he was trying to help the woman out of the pit when she fell into it but finally admitted the truth. Jackson pled insanity at his trial but was found guilty and sentenced to death. The state supreme court upheld his sentence and he was executed August 25, 1952.
Albert Jackson had a prior rap sheet; he'd enlisted in the Army back in 1947, was dishonorably discharged for going berserk, and went home to Charlottesville. Due to a drinking problem he couldn't hold a job down and shortly after returning home, he was convicted of the brutal rape of a black woman. A psychiatrist deemed him "a dangerous sexual psychopath" but he wasn't given any psychiatric treatment. Jackson served barely two years behind bars and was paroled on August 26, 1950 when the parole board greenlighted his release on the grounds that the woman he raped was of low moral character. On February 8, 1955, Lillian Vann Scott, 48, was working alone in a Franklin office when Lloyd Doby, 24, entered and told her "This is it, lady. This is a a stick up." He ordered Scott to open the drawers of the desk and filing cabinets but there was no money in them so he ordered her to hand over her wristwatch, jewelry, and the contents of her purse, then to open the safe and write a check in her employer's name. Doby beat Scott with a piece of metal, telling her he was a "desperate man" and she had to obey his orders or else. He locked the office door, took her into an adjacent room, and told her she was real pretty and it was a shame to have to do this but he was going to rape and kill her. One of his friends had been sent to prison for a similar offense and he wasn't going to let it happen to him.
Doby was executed in the electric chair on July 12, 1957 after unsuccessful attempts to appeal his sentence where he claimed he came from a broken home and mitigating circumstances were not considered, and he had no memory of raping Mrs. Scott; he was drunk the day of the assault and as far as he knew had only committed a robbery of her workplace. He had not been immediately apprehended after the assault and was on the lam for some time during which he went over into Maryland and committed an armed robbery in Baltimore which netted him an 18 year sentence. Doby had still another burglary case in Baltimore he'd been charged in and a rap sheet with a number of lesser offenses. The last rape-execution in Virginia history was that of Linwood Bunch. On September 20, 1958, the 18 year old Bunch (spelled as Burch in some sources) broke into a Newport News home and raped a 49 year old housewife. He had a history of prior assaults; he was accused of raping a 51 year old white female in Williamsburg three months earlier and a pregnant white teenager in Newport News. Bunch, like Albert Jackson, had also been dishonorably discharged from the Army. He was executed February 17, 1961.
These sob stories don't work anymore. The age of cameras has vindicated the racist South several times over by now.
