Why did the Israelites just decide to randomly worship an inanimate object of gold? Why did they actually think it had a deity inhabiting it when they themselves made it?These people had just seen the ten plagues of Egypt, they had walked through the parted sea, they had followed a pillar of fire through the desert and eaten food that fell from the sky. Now if I had witnessed all those miracles, I would never ever forget it and I certainly wouldn’t go off and start wishing for golden calves to worship just because the head prophet went away for a couple of weeks. No wonder God punished them by making them roam the desert for 40 years.
All Mediterranean gods were worshipped in the form of the bull. The primitives couldn't wrap their heads around the idea of a god that didn't have a physical idol, which is what was going on in this scene.
>>18258387Because that story was added later during the reformation of the religion that happened after Solomon. The autists in temple needed to embed the narrative threads of "we wuz led astray" in earlier narratives in order to justify why they were changing everything, so they just threw that shit in there. You're right that it sticks out like a sore thumb.t. ex-Jew
Exodus is a story, anon.
The golden bull was built from all the gold Israel had carried out of Egypt. This is symbolically important, they had raised up this luchre which was polluted by the idols of Egypt as a god in itself, it represents the heathenry of Egypt still at work in the minds of the Israelites. They had been so absolutely steeped in it, for so long, that it was not possible for them to be separated from it except by raising up a new generation in the wilderness.A generation separated from the rest of the world in that sense, to whom this kind of idolatry would be something not lived and perpetuated generational but a story of a time that was past. It's this kind of generation, one who has been taken out of Egypt not just physically but spiritually, who would have the faith necessary to go into Canaan and war with giants.Even though the ten plagues correspond to the Egyptian gods, and demonstrates the mastery of the Lord over each one of their particular domains, this message was lost on that first generation of Moses's Israel. Their trust in this God, which led them by the hand out of Egypt and worked such wonders before their eyes, was yet lacking. It would be their children, the next generation who never witnessed these events first hand, who would be found stronger in faith. As the good teacher said, you believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet believe.cont
>>18258491It's worth noting OP that you are slightly mistaken. God's punishment for the Golden Calf was not to make Israel wander in the desert. His punishment for this idolatry and the breaking of his covenant was the taking away of the heritage priesthood of the firstborn of every house from every tribe except for the Levites. The wandering in the desert was a punishment, really a remedy, because of the spies sent to survey the land of Canaan ten reported that it was hopeless and they should turn away while only two trusted in God's command. It's these two alone who would live to see the fulfillment. Even Moses himself could not enter the land, because he had struck a stone rather than speaking to it as instructed. Which is funny because he had a speech impediment.
Yeah OP, see this?>>18258491Notice how it's just rewritten "we wuz led astray" shit. This is just the goyim version (does not include the "We" part)
>>182583876th century BC Judahite propaganda against Israel, where Atik, the Bull of El was the symbol of the chief deity. Probably from the same redactor who invented Solomon and the united monarchy.
Oh look, the documentary hypothesis shills have come out of the woodwork like so many termites. You think they've even heard that it's fallen out of favor in academia since the late 70s because it's incoherent and based entirely on conjecture?Probably, but they won't let that stop them from using it as a cudgel against religion.
>>18258621No it hasn't, Old Testament 101 courses of every reputable university fully agree in 2025 that there are separete Yahwist, Priestly and Deuteronomistic sources in the OT.Did you by any chance get this misconception from some tiktok apologist who read the opening wikipedia paragraph and concluded the DH had "collapsed" in academia? Only the original formulation that the building blocks can neatly be separated from each other by analysis has been discarded, the DH is still alive and well.See, for example, Yale's lecture 4 notes on Yahwist vs Priestly doublets in Genesis; lecture 8 on the ahistorical Exodus narrative; lecture 10 on the three different JEDP law codes; and lectures 12-14 on the Deuteronomistic Historian, all fully supportive of the hypothesis.https://oyc.yale.edu/religious-studies/rlst-145
>>18258387Hell at least they were consistent with the Golden Calf. How many Gods have you worshipped today?
>>18258387The OT is three things. A vaguely wonky history text, a story of the jews technically not violating god's laws while he doesn't technically smite them for it, and god asking them to stop being jewish for TEN FUCKING MINUTES (their answer is no).
>>18258650>Yalelmaoaren't half their students functionally illiterate and can only do math at a grade school level or something maybe that's Harvard, doesn't matter; the prestige of these institutions is largely a thing of the pastThat is simply institutional inertia. These obsolete hacks have built entire careers on this garbage, and depend on it.Anyone can check the wiki page on the documentary hypothesis and see the truth that what formally enjoyed a kind of consensus lost it decades ago. Only dinosaurs still pretend it's relevant. And those who are ultimately most hostile to the Christian religion in particular merely parasitically latch themselves unto the theory to give them a veneer of credibility. Think your "mythvision" pseuds who engage in anti-Christian rhetoric as a profession, absolutely bilking their fedora edgelord viewer base.Intellectually honest people know there is absolutely no real evidence for this, and that the assumptions it relies on are strikingly ill founded. But what's worse than all this, is your own illiterate deficiency in ability to even treat this account as a story in it's own right. You have no grasp of the internal logic involved at all, and it shows. That's why you rely on suck farcical and mocking language to dismiss it out of hand, because you are incapable of wrestling with it in any other way.
Dude critical race theory and gender studies still exist in ivy league schools! That must mean there's an intellectual consensus that these fields are checking valid!Which obviously means it must all be true! They're totally not just indoctrination centers hawking a particular ideology for the express purpose of conditioning those who would subject themselves to that ordeal or anything!
>>18258387God was just playing a practical joke on Moses and told them to act like this behind his back, so when he came back down the mountain he'd get quite the fright.
