How did they avoid becoming a colony of the West for so long? When it happened in 1945, it barely even mattered since hard colonialism was dead.

Were they simply too far away from everyone else or simply lucky?

It's funny, because Westoids tried to colonize fucking everything and Japan is one of the very few nations who escaped that fate.
