Protestants do not understand that 'to worship' means 'to place at the top of all you value'.To 'make an idol' of something is to place *anything at all other than God* in that place of highest value.The Catholic position is that God and only God should be in that spot and putting anything else there is sin.

David bowed in front of the ark in Psalm 99:5, Joshua did the same in Joshua 7:6. God commands the use of icons in 1 Kings 6:29, even statues in Exodus 25:18-19. The use of graven images is forbidden, there is a line between non-graven and graven images.So the veneration offered to those represented by images is not idolatrous. Asking for prayers from saints that can hear you is perfectly fine, and so is the use of images during worship.
