The farmers grew plenty of other food that was exported. The problem was the poorest people (most of the island basically) who were barely making it by off a couple potatoes in the backyard were fucked when the famine happened. Most of Europe went through famine conditions at the time because of this and places like Prussia weathered the storm by buying American food and distributing it. Ireland was a disaster because a Cornishman who hated the Irish was in charge and decided not to distribute food because of the invisible hand of the market or something. England and Scotland were suffering from famine conditions around the same time, just not nearly as bad, unless you were also a gael but in the Scottish Highlands and were cleared off so some sheep could eat grass. What I’m saying is, gaels are weaker than sheep.
