And the Royal family intermarried with Edomites and the priests were not happy with that; since the current successor (at the time) had a Edomite father. Which was against Jewish Law; since the king had to be Jewish and Jewishness was passed down paternally. So the current king (at the time) worked with the Sanhedrin (the head religious body of Second temple Judaism) to change Jewishness to be based on maternal descent . Now, this ruling wasn't followed by all jews and there were lingering pockets of paternal descent believers. The Karaite sect of Judaism is based on paternal descent. And Most non-orthodox sects of Judaism allow for paternal descent for Jewishness.
