According to wikipedia's article about the longest prison sentences served just a bit over 100 people served over 50+ years in jail (many of them were political prisoners, wrongfully imprisoned, accidental murders, juveniles, even a POW or just people who would probably not serveso much time in most of today's justice systems)

Even for horrible crimes like murder when you lock up someone for like 50 years they will probably be either harmless old people by the time they get out of prison or, Most likely, dead. prison and punishment reform should be a goal for any serious progressive movement. Even if just for symbolic value life imprisonment should be abolished.

What about the people who can't be reformed? We only know so much about the human mind, we are still very far from figuring out how to help everyone unfortunately. Shouldn't these folks be separated from the rest of society so as not to harm others? Why do you assume that an old person is automatically harmless? Because they are less capable of physical violence?

I would take the death penalty over life imprisonment if the option were made available to me.

Real problems never get fixed by politics. That's the sad truth.

Lobotomy. It just works.

It should be allowed but rare.

Norway’s system seems like a reasonable compromise. For very serious crimes, they sentence you to 21 years, and after that, they can extend your sentence by five years at a time as long as you are deemed a danger to society. But you always have a chance to be let out if you can show you’ve been reformed.

Why have any punishment for crimes. Just let em out in a couple months, sure.

I think that rather than life imprisonment being abolished, prison should be less shit. It should be a decent place to actually live in, not as great as being outside since you dont have the freedom to leave but atleast better than having absolutely nothing to do.
The biggest complaint i read about from prisoners was the boredom of prison. They are deliberately prevented from enjoying themselves, they have to read the same book multiple times, they cant change the channel on the tv which they are only allowed to watch for brief parts of the day, every single part of their life is microamanaged by the system to be as dreadful as possible

If they are given a comfy bed, a decent wallpaper for their room, some forms of entertainment like the internet (albeit with some restrictions depending on how dangerous the prisoner is) and maybe some skill based activities (learning how to play basketball). Then life imprisonment wouldnt be the most immoral solution ever

Wasn't there a case in which a man 'deemed unlikely to kill again because of his old age' killed someone about a week after his release?
