On this date, the Treaty of Versailles came into effect, formally ending World War I.

Unironically not any worse than what the Germans had planned. And the victors only ever tried to make it more lenient.

I think Germany was far too lenient on France after 1871. They should have went as harsh as Versailles, strip off more territory than just Elsaß-Lothringen, take all their colonies, limit the French Military to a police force and pay over a 100 Billion Franks rather than just 5 Billion

The Franco-Prussian War and World War I are not comparable.

You are right. The Germans surrendered before the Allies set foot on German soil to get a favourable treatment only to be treated as if they had unconditionaly surrendered.
The Franco-Prussian War was won after the entire French Goverment and Military collapsed and the Germans besieged Paris.

But alas, the past cannot be changed. Hopefully the next time the Germans reach Paris, they won't be as lenient as the Nazis or Prussians, given how France never seems to return the favour anyway.
