Why bother preserving them at all when they had every political, cultural, and especially economic motive to switch out of it? In truth, eastern Europeans are fallible to their pride. Tell them they're not like their neighbors and they're special and they'll eat it up. There are many Slavs today that think Slavs were an ancient superpower that rubbed elbows with the Sumerians, speaking privet to them in 4000 BC.
