The root of modern Russian-Ukrainian war goes back to Chmielnicki Uprising.Context: Chmielnicki was a Polish nobleman, who got cheated on money and land, and he was angry and wanted justice. His anger was justified. Because he did not believe in courts, he decided to join the cossacks and start the uprising.Funnily enough on Polish side in this civil war was Jarema Wiśniowiecki, who was Ukrainian. So Ukrainian leader of Polish forces fought Polish leader of Ukrainian forces.Poland won the uprising, but it was a pyrrhic victory. As a result Treaty of Hadiach was plannedhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_HadiachIn other words, despite winning the war, Poles wanted Polish-Lithuanian-Ukrainian commonwealth to correct their mistakes. But it was too late. Chmielnicki sold out his country to Moscovites. In the minds of Moscow "once you are ours, you belong to us forever". Moscow quickly abolished any liberty to Ukrainians, and claimed them as their own serfs. Ukrainians, realizing their mistake tried to go back to Polish crown, but it was too late, because Poland had other wars to attend to, and was being too weakened to make any rules.Fast forward 350+ years. Russia still claims Ukraine to be their vassal state, going back to Chmielnicki. And Ukrainians still pay for their mistakes centuries ago. Was it worth it?A lesson to be learn: never make deals with Russians.
